The History of Saegertown UMC

Early Methodists met in private homes and later shared a building with other faiths.

One of their first meeting houses was a barn-like structure that survived over 100 years

A wooden frame church was built on the corner of Euclid Avenue and Washington Street in 1875.  This structure burned in 1917 and was replaced by a red brick structure.

This brick structure forms the central portion of our present church.  The first parsonage can be seen to the right of the church.  It was replaced in 1962 – giving us the current parsonage on McGill Street.  This gave the church land to build the Benner Education wing in the late 1960’s.

The addition of the education wing provided much needed Sunday School and Fellowship areas and the church really started to grow.  Parking was a problem, and the house next to the education wing was purchased and demolished to provide a parking lot.

The church of the 90’s saw a need for additional seating in the sanctuary and an expanded office area.  This allowed several rooms to be converted to Sunday School and meeting areas.  The new sanctuary was dedicated in 1995…. And we continue to grow….
